Dental sealants are a simple procedure in which a tooth-colored resin “coating” is painted onto the surface of the tooth. This effectively “seals” the deep grooves, acting as a barrier and protecting enamel from plaque and acids. Their primary purpose is to prevent decay on the biting surfaces of your chewing teeth. Easy to apply, sealants take only a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing and depending on the patient can last several months to several years before a reapplication is needed. Most frequently the sealants are applied as soon as the permanent chewing teeth erupt. Both children and adults can equally benefit from sealants in the fight against tooth decay.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. In children under 6 years of age, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of permanent teeth making difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps speed remineralization as well as disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth of both children and adults.
